Our aim is to create a supportive community where your mentor can inspire, encourage, and challenge you to reach your full potential.

Let's celebrate and embrace the power of mentorship, and let the journey begin.

WHAT IS WAP MENTORING?

EXPERIENCED MENTORS

5-WEEK PROGRAMME

STRUCTURED SESSIONS

WAP Mentoring is a 5 week programme designed to mentor women in our community effectively and efficiently. With a plethora of amazing, motivated & forward thinking black women, what better way than to utilize the many skills we have within our community. We decided it only made sense to provide a structured program where women will be able to gain structured guidance & expert advice from skilled women who are doing great things professionally & personally.

WHAT MENTORING MEANS TO

Different people have very different ideas about what mentoring is!

Unrealistic expectations about what mentoring can achieve can undermine its effectiveness. Confusion about the role and responsibilities of mentoring partners can lead to disappointment.

So here are a few definitions of what our meaning of WAP mentoring means:

Building confident relationships through sharing experiences and knowledge with others.

An alliance that creates a space for dialogue, that results in reflection, action and learning.

Partnership between a less experienced mentee and a more experienced mentor, who uses their professional and life experience to help the mentee develop and advance their life or career.

WE'RE MENTORS - NOT COACHES!

It’s easy to confuse mentoring and coaching so here is the difference.

Coaching and mentoring are not the same, though the differences are subtle and those who coach and those who mentor use similar skills.

Mentoring and coaching both:

  • Provide one-to-one interaction to achieve personalised learning and growth.

  • Cater to individual needs, personal styles and time constraints.

  • Can be conducted face to face or from remote locations.

  • Complement formal training and educational experiences.

  • Process real-life issues, problems and decisions.

  • Facilitate access to information and choices about new behaviors and actions.

  • Support the achievement of positive outcomes.

So how are coaching and mentoring different?

The differences are probably best understood by looking at their purpose. You need to keep in mind that we are talking about dynamic relationships that sometimes don’t neatly fit in one box.

  • Coaching is used when there is a well-defined goal that is based on improving skills and performance

  • Mentoring is appropriate for career planning, providing general guidance, setting and achieving goals, making decisions or facilitating problem solving.

  • Most of the time, mentoring is non-directive so mentees take responsibility for decisions and actions.

  • Mentoring enables people to set and achieve their own goals.

  • It helps them explore issues and make informed decisions.

And it helps them think about how to handle situations or manage their career & goals.
